Lady Starlight, a performance artist, met Gaga during this time. Gaga was signed to Streamline Records by Vince Herbert in 2007 following a performance at Lollapalooza Festival 2007. While working as an apprentice songwriter for an internship with Famous Music Publishing, which was later bought by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, Gaga then signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV. The result was that she was commissioned to write songs for Britney Spears and her labelmates New Kids on the Block, Fergie, and the Pussycat Dolls. At Interscope, singer-songwriter Akon recognized her vocal abilities when she sang a reference vocal for one of his tracks in studio; Akon then convinced Interscope-Geffen-A&M Chairman and CEO Jimmy Iovine to form a joint deal by having her also sign with his own label Kon Live, making her his "franchise player. Gaga's debut album from 2008 The Fame, which she released in 2008, was a mediocre radio hit. The singer performed in Europe and the US in support of the album. But, it was not until the 2009 hit "Just Dance" that the mainstream music scene really began to take off. Gaga was suffering from a Labral tear on her right leg that she was nursing for a few weeks in order to ensure she was able to continue the tour. After her performance in Toronto Gaga became unable to walk and was in extreme discomfort. She was admitted to the hospital and her tour was cancelled.
